When I was D/A on "Hinnites" in 1969, Capt. Ken Bramley was the Master. He told me that during the war, he was on a ship going up the Mersey into the Manchester Ship Canal. He went to the toilet and was "sitting on the throne" when the ship ahead detonated a magnetic mine. The blast wave smashed in the storm valve, and he found himself blasted upwards by the jet of water, and swimming for his life! Worse, the toilet door opened inwards, and the weight of water prevented him from opening the door to escape. In his broad Geordie accent, he said "Mun, I thought I was going to arrive in Heaven wi' me keks (trousers) roon' me ankles!".
