Hi There,
Got me a picture of the "old" METULA. Sailed on it in 1950/51 as a radio operator. On the last part of the 9 month trip we sailed around the U.K. from Southampton, to Brixham, Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh.
On the trip from Southampton to Brixham (near Torquay), I must have passed over or very close to the wreck of the Dutch S.S. TRITO, a ship that was sunk by the German airforce on September 20, 1940, just S.W. of Portland Harbour. My dad was Chief Engineer on that vessel. I did not know at the time, but learned this about 4-5 years ago when reading about a number of Dutch vessels that were sunk by the Germans.
The trip on the METULA was probably one of the best I ever made in my short 3 1/2 years life as a radioman.
Very interesting website.
Sincerely,
Frans Stappers
