Trochiscus - I was Third Engineer on the Halia in 1959 when we towed her for five days fully loaded from somewhere in the Indian Ocean to Trincomalee in Ceylon - she had sustained some kind of catastrophic engine problem but nobody was hurt as far as I know. We were paid salvage money according to our salary which was a lovely bonus and the handsome cheque arrived just before Christmas. The procedure carried out in doing this tow was for many years adopted as the standard recommended procedure in Lloyds Underwriters manual.

in 1959 when crossing the indian ocean i woke up on my feet when the turbines ran away and exploded sending blades through the engine room walls. we were adrift for about eight days before we discharged cargo into a norwegian tanker and then we were taken in tow by the shell tanker halia, my previous ship. we were towed to ceylon from where i was transferred to the eastern fleet in singapore.
