Though not very much a publicised event, but the Umm Laqhab was involved in a Search and Rescue operation in the Balintang channel(North Phillipines) on one of it's voyages from the middle east to Japan. The crew were able to rescue 7 sailors who were the crew of a barge that sunk off Babuyan islands. The operation lasted 18 hrs and with the help of other merchant vessels a total of 16 sailors were rescued out of a crew of 20. 1 was confirmed dead sighted by the Umm Laqhab while 3 were missing. The survivors were landed in japan at Chiba where they flew back home.
