I remember Christmas Day 1961, we were in the Arabian Gulf, at sea. In those days under 18 or a cadet and the "Old Man" would not let us drink. That day he sent down 4 cans of grapefruit juice for the Apprentices, there were 4 of us. I was the only "first tripper", but the others quite senior, including one in his last year and was 20 years old. We also had a second "sparky" who was the same age as us, about 18, he, for some reason was allowed to drink!!!

We were also instructed to have an early lunch, before all the Officers sat down to theirs. Anyway word got around about this, and just after the "old man" went down aft for lunch, first the Chief Eng, and then the Chief Officer, both sent us a crate of beer. So as I recall we got stuck into that, but were also not stupid, and stashed some away for "rainy" days.

I'll always remember this episode, never came across anything like that again, thank goodness.
