I sailed on the San Gerardo ,my longest stay away from home 16 months,on arriving in Boston we sailed right into the jetty causing a great hole in the bow, after temporary repairs we sailed for Rotterdam to dry dock,it was a horrendous crossing storms causing more damage, resulting in a 13 week stay in Rotterdam much to the delight of the crew.A memorable voyage with numerous ports of call ,Japan Australia,South America. Some really good times to look back on.The pumpman who you know never goes ashore, decided to chance a bit of shore leave in Cartagena Colombia.Big Regrets he was robbed and came back half naked.

It was only after I had sailed on her that I discovered my uncle, Les Renton, was on the San Gerardo (1) 4th engineer when she was torpedoed with the loss, I believe, of all hands.
